  • The Reason

You know what pisses me off? Music. As much as it was meant to be enjoyed, it also is a constant source of ultra-pissiness on my part. My friends often discuss music, mostly to share with me bands that I don't want to listen to in the first place and end up hating when I finally give in and listen to them just to stop my so-called 'friends' from begging  me to check out the said bands/artists.

In our discussions, we often stumble across the unfortunate topic of mainstream music and can never really agree if it truly sucks or not. My homeslice, Lithium98, recently brought up this topic on his blog, asking why we suddenly hate bands if they become mainstream.

THEREFORE, I GIVE THEE THE REASON.

Alright, so imagine you have a band that you really, really love. Let's call this band 'Evil Babies'. So, back in 1995, you discovered Evil Babies after listening to the radio at 4 a.m. in the morning. Your immediate reaction was "Wow! I need to buy the cassette tape!" so you ran to the music store the following day were orgasmically delighted to see that they had an Evil Babies tape on the shelf. You listened to the tape and it was the best.

Later, you found yourself at an Evil Babies concert. The show rocked. You loved every moment of it. The best part was, you were among fellow Evil Babies fans. While at school, nobody had even heard of such a band. In fact, nobody even wanted to hear about Evil Babies. Every time you brought it up, they said "Quit talking about that band. Nobody cares." Nevertheless, you remained an avid Evil Babies fan. Soon, an Evil Babies poster found itself up on your wall, then, several more.

Then, something incredible happened. You somehow acquired a backstage pass to an Evil Babies concert and got to meet the band. It was a surreal moment. You got to shake hands with Davie Joel Aldrin, the lead singer whom you had admired for his incredible lyrics, artistic talent and raw sexuality for years. "I love your music!" you blurt out and add "Keeping making great stuff!" They smile and assure you that Evil Babies will continue to keep making awesome music for the fans.

    Years later...

You're in highschool and aren't really popular. You've begun to be accustomed to your general isolation from others and your inability to relate with them. You resent them for snubbing you for so long. Friends you had in middle school have changed. They don't hang out with you anymore, because they're too busy hanging out with people you can't stand. They act super-douchey. Still, you have everything you love, like your hobby of Parkour, and your music. Evil Babies is still on all your playlists and you love them.

Then, something amazing happens. Evil Babies releases a new album. As you listen to it, you realize that it's a bit different than all the older albums. Perhaps they're just maturing in their sound, you think. You begin hearing their new album on the radio and the songs get played so many times that they begin to annoy you. Plus, even worse, all the people you despise are suddenly wearing Evil Babies t-shirts and singing the new Evil Babies songs in the hallways.

You feel like the band stopped caring about you, the fan. It said it loved you and was going to keep making music for you. But no, it started making music for uncultured cretins! Now, you find yourself hating Evil Babies. By golly, if they don't care about you, then you don't care about them. The new album sucks, and you know it because you've heard their old stuff, but as far as everyone else is concerned, it's 'the first album' by Evil Babies and it rocks. Finally, there is nothing more fucking annoying than watching in dismay as some giggly, bubbly, preppy girl lip-synchs an Evil Babies song while doing the Chicken Dance.

    And THAT is why

It's like the band cheated on me. I tore all my Evil Babies posters down.

  • They're babies, but evil.

  • Second? Third?

  • Awesome! Cassette tapes FTL!

  • haha. It's so true.

There's five-iron frenzy song called "handbook for the sellout" which explains this phenomenon.

  • how, random comments that mean nothing.

    four hundred and eighty ninth???

  • Everyone knows that once a band changes they become crap.

  • :( .

    Society suckageness.

    -Anna.

  • I believe The Reason is a song by Hoobastank, which is probably not on your playlist.  Seriously though, I believe there is a room in my iPod for groups that are well known and those that are like the Evil Babies. Perhaps I'm just optimistic. Finally, the more you know, the more you grow.

  • Very nice write down of the reason. Glad all the unknown stuff that I love an listen to is still unknown and won't be going that way as far as I can see.

    @TpC_ReiO - for the loss?

  • You have to change too.

  • korn did this to me. hed pe did kinda. enya and nora jones have not but i dont feel like i know either of them.

mia, dj antoine and seryoga are my new musical lovers. they will never be big here

  • ...I had the same feeling with Wheezer. All I hope is The Kooks don't take the success of the good music and make popular crappy music for extras.

There has and will on ever be one constant in music. Willi Nelson.

He'll smoke your stash, kick your ass, and keep singing the way he wants, whether most people like it or not. Hooray for old badass pot heads.

  • I blame a certain genre of music for creating the emo movement!

  • those dastardly Evil Babies...

  • I may be a little slow, but is Evil Babies a real band or a metaphorical one? Also, I hate when that happens. You love something when no one else even knows about it, then it becomes mainstream and it seems like you're just like all the other lemmings flocking to what sells.

  • The mystery of this phenomena has plaqued my brain for eons... I thought so many would be pleased at their band of choice making it 'big'... Instead of turning on them like a nest of angry pythons... Now I know.. In the end isn't cheating the demise of many a relationship? peace & my two cents worth

  • @another_rebel_without_a_cause - Yeah.. Go Willie! That's him for sure.

  • I feel exactly about R.E.M. loved the album from the 80-s and then suddenly everybody was singing Losing my Religion (or at least trying) and I didn't recognize the group that brought me Orange Crush and The One I Love. Although I must admit that I really like their last album.

  • I've experienced this with far too many bands
    DX

  • Several bands I really liked have turned into sell-outs, whoring out subpar creations of their talent for endless piles of cash. I wouldn't mind so much if they'd just share some of the cash with their fans that were there from the beginning.

  • See, some of the time it isn't the artist's fault. Producers will do some bastardly things to get their way. Johnny Cash was dangerously close to overstepping the bound because he was under contractual obligation.

Thankfully, Rick Rubin let him get back to his roots and play his own kind of songs.

Here's hoping the Moldy Peaches don't start to suck now that everyone knows "Anyone else but you"

  • I still favor Cake, Pre "V" Live, Jason Mraz....and of course.. C.M von Webber.

  • That is a great name

  • Holy shit, I could put in Pearl Jam and this post would be 99.9% accurate for me!!

  • interesting.... i still like music though..what annoys me is the playlist that radio stations limit themselves to. they really need to change that..

  • EVIL BABIES STILL RAWK!!! FTW!!!!

  • ~ nods ~ totally agree and I know so many examples of great bands going down the commercial gurgler. It's so ironic, isn't it? In the beginning, you want them to be successful, you want everyone around you to know them... and then when they do you feel like someone's pissing at your leg... What's worse is that entire styles of music become mainstream. Way back when I learned to ride a bike, Metallica, Slayer and Iron Maiden were Evil Babies... we used to call their music "Speedmetal", "Blackmetal"... "Thrash"... and these days? You'll find them in the "Pop/Rock" bargain bin. One of our Flashback stations played  a "Highschool Reunion" the other night with Cat Stevens and The Beatles and "Enter Sandman". Damn, what's wrong with the world?

  • good thing that hasn't happened to any bands i like

  • It was odd going into high school and seeing everyone changed into a Doors fan.  I mean...it was cool at first seeing all these people wearing Jim Morrison shirts and reading books about him, but then comparing who "knows" and "loves" The Doors from eachother just got annoying.

  • The More You Know...LOL.

  • I would be tempted to sell out for piles of cash and millions of fans.  Really, really tempted.

  • cassette tape in '95?  probably not. =P

    but yep, let's mainstream.

  • Absolutely true. What you describe is also known in the "biz" as "selling out". I used to be a bit of a Linkin Park fan :ashamed: but then they released their second "album" which turned out to be a remix cd of their first album. I immediately broke my Hybrid Theory copy and have since then mocked the band and the idiotic fans. Same with Disturbed. They just totally went to suck when they went mainstream. And they're nu-metal.

  • I never was really into the modern music scene so I can't relate to this too well.

  • And this is why you have to constantly find new bands and don't get too attached to the "old" ones.  Then you'll always be ahead of the rest of the world, and you'll still have kick-ass music.  Of course, that's just a pain in the ass, and who cares about what the preps/chavs are listening to anyways?  They'll move on to the next "big thing" a month from now and forget all about what happened.

I just hope this doesn't happen with Flyleaf any more than it is now.  Stupid, because they've only got one mainstream song (Fully Alive) and people think the rest of the album sucks.  It's not even the best song on the album!!!  Hell, some songs on their EP albums are much better.

[hyperbole] I would seriously kill someone. [/hyperbole]

  • How traumatizing!  But time does heal all wounds and this too, shall pass.............etc.

  • Damn babies. It's like you give them your SOUL and then they shit all over it by going mainstream.

Truth is the general public could care less. Holy, loyal music lovers should take it easy. The mainstream pull is too strong, even for your beloved bands.

  • music is so awesome it's awesome!

  • Really, I could care less whether or not a band I liked went mainstream.  Some bands start off pretty low budget (Coheed and Cambria) and are obviously limited by their budget, but when they begin to pick up steam, they also pick up moneys, which means they also pick up production values.  I could care less really.

Which I guess is really a very good thing otherwise I wouldn't like the bands I do.
I also give you a vintage profile picture for this comment.
    Just because I can

  • I'm sadly enough, on both sides

  • You're PMS'ing aren't you?

  • ahh once upon a time, i hate music. truly hate it. didn't think there'd be a day i'd hate music. but i did. becos my last boyfriend left me for music. not even another woman, but music. i lost to music....

  • is my comment even related? ahh..nevermind that...

  • Stick with the old-school; Classic Rock all the way.

  • I despise bands like that!  It's so sad.

  • I just want music that doesn't suck!!!!

  • FORTY-EIGHT!!! I'M FORTY-EIGHTH, SUCKAS!!!

  • I bought 45's,Albums,8 Tracks,Cassettes ,CD"s and now Itunes!
I hate when bands go commercial,

  • I was 49 and 50!

  • The evil babies escaped the evil baby orphanage? This could be disastrous to the space/time continuum if they meet their alternate selves! Never mind... nerdfighter reference...

I've never felt betrayed by a band getting famous, so I'll stay out of this one. I'm just happy for them.

  • So basically when a lot of people like the band, you liking the band doesn't make you feel so special anymore. Therefore, the band sucks. Nice.

  • usually the older stuff is the best. i listened to CSS so much. it got somewhat popular with my friends when the ITOUCH commercial came out. after a bit, i hated 'MUSIC IS MY HOT HOT SEX' for three months. but i loved them too much to care. though hopefully there 2nd album is loveable as the first

though one band i can never hate is the YEAH YEAH YEAHS.

i had that experience in high school as a freshman. my friends left me for dead after the 1st half of the year. i felt dead for years, until senior year. it was like a whole season of SKINS for the whole year though. but by the end of the year. i lost a great sub-group of friends to talk homo about, some left, and A LOT i'll probably will never see again. but i ended up reuniting with my friends for Community College (this fall). so i guess it ended pretty nicely for me

  • can i stereotype to say that mainstream music will not be the type of music you are looking for?

  • simple because mainstream music gets violated by "mainstream ppl" (in your words: "super-douchey people" lol)

  • Evil Babies would be a great band name. I've experienced this with a few bands. Actually, the EXACT same scenario with Good Charlotte. I started listening to them when I was 12 and no one in my school had ever heard of them. I loved their music and related to a lot of the lyrics on their first 2 cd's, then came the evil death device - the chronicles of life & death. Suddenly, I seen girls who I hated singing along with the new Good Charlotte songs. They didn't know anything about "The Click" or "Little Things" or any of the better songs by GC. Suddenly, they're playing synth-pop and the band members are marrying people like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Now all the little 10 year old sluts who think they're so great because their parents don't love them and they dress like whores and have sex way too young are loving this band and saying they're so "punk rock" because they listen to Good Charlotte and wear overpriced cheaply made clothes from the mall when that has absolutely nothing to do with what punk music is all about, or even what Good Charlotte originally was. They betrayed me.

  • one word...incubus

but i'll still go see there show, even if it means sitting at the way back drinking beer and giving hate eyes to any girlie girl that passes me....

scuse me...need to go listen to fungus amungus again...

  • i wholeheartedly agree with your arguement lol. and this is exactly why I hope Arctic Monkeys doesn't go stateside.

  • I am so feeling this blog.

    It's oh so true that when non-mainstream bands suddenly convert all those people you've tried to educate in the art of music, you feel used and hate-filled. Ugh, I'm just glad it doesn't happen to me often. But Nightwish is getting fairly mainstream now and if it gets any worse, I'll be VAY sad. -__-;;

  • @ALpharEyX - They probably will. They're HUGELY mainstream over here. I don't like them though.

  • lol yeah 'cause it's all about you! :p

  • Now,  come on!  You love kittens more than eels?  What kind of a supervillain are you?

Thank you VERY much for the rec!

It's funny,  I figured I might get ten comments on that post.  Thank you Nori!

  • Yeah, I know a lot of people that get really upset over "their" bands making it big but wouldn't you want to share good music with everyone?

  • I was thinking about this the other day..

its true.. but I notice some artists stay true..

  • I know what you mean.

I had some bands that I really enjoyed listening to, but none of my friends even took a second to listen to them.
As soon as they go mainstream though, they are like "woah dude! these guys are da bomb yo!!"

It kind of feels like they don't have any sense in music and they only enjoy what the mainstream puts out.
It's like a friend saying "yeah man, i hate tomatoes," but when a girl who loves tomatoes comes around he goes "dude I love those red juicy round things...YO"

I don't know... I just find it very annoying.

  • Luckily for me, I was unpopular AND not into music! WHEW!

  • Great post!! COME VISIT MY SITE PLEASE!!

  • That drives me crazy -- when people ONLY like an artist/song/genre because everyone else does. It's not real music appreciation, it's just sad imitation. And a song comes on the radio and they're like, "OMG, I love this song!" and I'm like, "Oh my God, this is the 2,784th time I've heard this song in the past hour! Turn it off, turn it off!!!"

I prefer an "eclectic" music taste. Then, if one section sells out, you still have stand-bys. Or, just listen to really old music -- none of my friends have heard of any of the 80's heavy metal bands that I listen to, as they are too busy listening to... yeah, I don't know what they listen to because I avoid modern music like the plague. Makes pop culture conversations awkward, but I can handle that.

  • deathcab for cutie.
    regina spektor.

  • Evil babies? Shame on you! Haha.
